With a mission to produce knowledgeable Biomedical Engineers with a commitment to serve the society, the Biomedical Engineering Department was started in July 2006.

The students are selected for the program on merit and almost equal number of girls and boys (23:20) have opted for the course this year. There are students hailing even from Northern States of India. The department follows the Anna University syllabus.

The department has competent and well-qualified faculty with rich experience in the different facets of Biomedical Engineering. Two of the faculties are hardcore medical doctors and one is a Ph.D. in Clinical Biochemistry. The department has learning resources like computers, with Intranet and Internet facilities, laser printer, LCD and library facility. Plans to establish state of the art laboratories are under process. Innovative teaching aids such as OHPs and LCDs are used in the classrooms. Anatomy is taught using models, charts and explanatory CDs. The department has a very effective counseling system where the teachers take personal care of the students and provide counseling on academic and personal issues. There is one student counselor for every 15 students who monitor continuously the progress of their wards during the semester. The students are provided with lesson plans and lesson notes. Question banks are also prepared by the faculty members and given to the students.

International conference on Nanotechnology organized by Madras University.

One week short course on Nano Science and Nanotechnology at RTTI, Chandigargh.

Lecture on Protection of International Patent Rights organized by M.S. Swaminathan Science Research Foundation.

 

Dr. Johanna Rajkumar, Professor & Head attended faculty development programme on “Personality Development & Communication Skills” organized by ASPIRE, Chennai, “Ultra Filtration Process” organized by Center Biotechnology, Anna University, GE Health Care Limited and a guest lecture given by Dr. LESTER CRAWFORD, Senior Counsel, Policy Direction Inc., USA on “History, Risks, Benefits and Future of Bio technology” organized by M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai.

Dr. J. Nirmal Joseph, Professor attended a faculty development programme on “International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICNSNT 2006)” organized by the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, University of Madras, Guindy campus, Chennai from 26th to 28th Aug 2006, and a short term programme on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology organized by The Applied Science department of National Institute of Technical Teacher’s Training and Research (NITTTR), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, Chandigarh from Nov 6th to Nov10th, 2006.

A Guest lecture on “Collagen Based Wound Dressing” by Dr. Mary Babu, Deputy Director and Head Department of Biomaterials, TICEL Bio Park, Taramani, Chennai-113 was conducted on 26.11.2006 in the college.

Other than the academic activities, Biomedical Engineering department also offers consultancy for the Healthcare and Maintenance of the students and staff. The department also motivates the students to organize and participate in Seminars, and other competitions. The department has plans to conduct National and International level Conferences, in collaboration with Biotechnology department. Community orientation programmes are being arranged as a part of the decennial celebrations of the institutions, two papers were published in Biomedicine journal on experimental diabetes.

The department has a tie-up with Sri Ramachandra Medical Hospital for providing exposure to the students in practical functioning of Biomedical Equipments. The department also uses the common career guidance cell to provide guidance to the students on higher studies.

 
The department is planning to

Establish state of the art laboratories.

Improve learning resources.

Introduce as many elective subjects as possible to facilitate easy employability.

Develop industry institute interaction.

Provide consultancy.

Go for NBA accreditation on attaining eligibility.

Start PG courses and promote research.

Mould the students to become good engineers and better citizens.
